PROHIBITED

The work of an artist is based on getting his inspiration from the human moral. So, what’s best now, than confronting prohibition to a « soft utopia ». The artist Richard Schlang is highlighting the prohibition, which has a real implication in the contemporary.

Aux frontières de l’interdit.
From the borders of the prohibition.

L’interdiction, pilier de la société morale, du bien vivre ensemble, exigeant de chacun un engagement individuel fort, désigne cette prohibition d’un acte supposé avoir des conséquences néfastes. Or, elle correspond avant tout à la répression d’un désir, ouvrant par la même la possibilité - et même la tentation - de sa transgression.
Prohibition, which is the basement of a moral society, for the wellbeing together, presents this one, as an act with some pernicious consequences, while requiring from each one, a real involvement. However, the non achievement of a desire, is an open door to the temptation and transgression.

Les interdits des séries « Prohibited » ne se fondent pas sur une crainte, une peur ou une aversion mais bien sur un désir dont la satisfaction serait nuisible pour l’ordre social. Ils sont intériorisés; ils investissent la conscience jusqu’à transformer  les sentiments. Mais cela ne signifie pas un surcroit de conscience, au contraire.
Fear, repulsion are not the foundation of the thema « Prohibited « , but the foundation of the realisation of a desire, which satisfaction would be condemned by the social moral. Having been digested, there are spreading into the consciousness , until it alters feelings. But it doesn’t mean that it is a growing conscious, at the contrary.

Cela montre comment la conscience peut censurer ses propres motivations jusqu’à se plier à une attitude qu’elle ne comprend plus. La certitude du monde, sans doute, est à ce prix. En même temps qu’elle l’attire confusément, la violation de l’interdit répugne à la conscience. La censure a joué.
This way, consciousness shows how it could be a censor for itself, and how it bows to a gesture which has no meaning anymore. You have to pay the price, if you want to get the knowledge of the world. Although there is an attraction, in a confused way, there is also a repulsion between the transgression and the consciousness. Censorship took its part.

Une dualité retranscrite dans les septs vidéos et photographies correspondantes de manière abstraite par l’émotion que dégagent ces personnes en pleine transgression et de manière figurative par cette séparation gauche / droite de l’écran présentant l’effet de la prohibition par opposition au sujet prohibé.
In an abstract way, a duality exists in the six videos with their pictures, highlighted by the emotion of the characters while transgressing. In a figurative way, this duality is also revealed by the separation, left/right, of the screen, which is confronting the result of the prohibition to the prohibited subject.

Ce jeu de contestation de la règle sociale sous-tend la question de la délivrance de cette tentation à laquelle Oscar Wilde répond très bien : « Résistez et votre âme se rend malade à force de languir ce qu’elle s’interdit ». N’opposez donc aucune résistance à vous délecter de « Prohibited ». Playing with the protest of the social morality, it leads to a question about how to elude it. Oscar Wilde has got the answer : Resist temptation and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself.
